What is Tobacco Cessation Counseling?

The development of an individualized treatment plan to assist with erradicating tobacco usage from daily life; thus improving the overall health and quality of daily living.

Why Should I quit Tobacco Usage?

  • Tobacco use is the #1 cause of preventable, premature disability, disease, and death in the US.
  • Smoking is the major cause of Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD) including Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis. Over 85% of deaths due to COPD are related to cigarette smoking!
  • Cigarette smoking is responsible for 30% of all Cancer deaths and 20% of all Heart Disease deaths.
  • Nearly 90% of all Lung Cancer deaths are caused by smoking.

 

How Can I be Evaluated for Tobacco Cessation Counseling?

Discuss this at your next visit with your Respiratory Specialist physician. He will refer you to our Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist, Karen DeLong CRNP, CTTS.

 

Evaluation Process:

  • Initial visit for tobacco will be 60 minutes and includes a detailed tobacco history including previous “quit attempts”, triggers, stressors and behaviors.
  • Evaluate Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence
  • Recognize and understand that Tobacco Usage is an Addiction
  • Education of the pathophysiology of addiction.
  • Assessment, review and discussion of individualized treatment options for success and prevention of relapse.
  • Subsequent visits are 30 minutes in length and scheduled as needed.

 

Treatment Options:


Pharmacotherapy

  • Nicotine Replacement Therapy such as patch, gum, lozenge, inhaler, nasal spray
  • Oral Agents such as Bupropion or Chantix

 

Behavioral Changes

  • Modification of behaviors such as discontinuation of tobacco use in your home, car and/or workplace.
  • Stress Management Techniques- individualized.
  • Complimentary Therapies such as Hypnotherapy, Accupuncture, Laser Accupressure, and Reiki.

 

Support Systems

  • Tobacco Support Groups
  • Telephone Quit Line
  • Computer Blog Sites
  • Family and/or Friend Support

 

Is Tobacco Cessation Counseling covered by health insurance?

Insurance coverage for this service varies depending on additional medical history and diagnosis. Coverage would be reviewed on an individual basis.
